Five Tips for Graceful Aging

By Dr. Jillian Finker
With over 20 years of experience in my practice, I have been privileged to witness many patients age gracefully. They maintain a vibrant quality of life well into their 90s, engaging in activities like competitive ballroom dancing, spelunking and continuing to work and thrive. The following five tips have proven essential in helping these individuals maintain their independence and joyfully embrace their elder years.
Stay Active: Engage in enjoyable forms of exercise, whether it’s pickleball, dancing or yoga. Keeping active is crucial; it significantly reduces the risk of needing a nursing home as we age.
Prioritize Nutrition: A balanced diet and proper hydration are vital in preventing strokes and promoting overall anti-aging. Focus on whole, non-processed foods, emphasizing a variety of vegetables, lean organic meats, fish and colorful carbohydrates.
Consider Supplements: Under the guidance of a naturopathic doctor, supplementing with vitamins, herbs and minerals can help prevent nutrient depletion as we age. My great uncle, who lived to be a centenarian, was ahead of his time in taking vitamins and other nutraceuticals daily.
Get Outside and Connect: Social interaction plays a significant role in longevity. The more we engage with others, the greater our life expectancy tends to be. Soak up the sun and enjoy the company of friends and family!
Release Your Fears: Finding peace with the concept of death and addressing this common fear is crucial as we age. Seek guidance from therapists, spiritual leaders or counselors to navigate these feelings. One of my favorite mentors once expressed his perspective beautifully: “I’m curious to see what happens next.”
